Maybe you heard about this, but there has been a new revolution in the tech world. More specifically in the smartphone world. Have you seen the latest trend among the flagships manufactured by phone companies? 2:1 is basically the aspect ratios of the phones produced this year by the smartphone companies.
Every year the trend changes. Be it in smartphones, fashion, opinions, etc. And it becomes imperative for the companies to respect this trend and make products for the people who follow the trends in order to maximize their profit and gain a household name. And when it comes to private tech like phones and tablets, the dynamism is unparalleled.
Smartphone companies who manufacture products targeting multiple nations, for them, their flagship phones become their basic bread and butter. These flagship phones in a way become the face of their company. It then becomes essential for the companies to design their phones in such a way that it attracts maximum users. For e.g., back in 2015, the trend was for phones with a big display, so Apple designed the iPhone in such a manner that they went astray from their regular designs and built the iPhone 6 with a display much bigger than its predecessor or its traditional design. It was the biggest ever iPhone. In 2016, the trend was for metallic phones. Majority of the companies started manufacturing phones with an aluminium design. Come 2017, the trend has changed. The trend calls for phones with minimum bezels and maximum display.
The flagships are designed in such a way that the distance between the phone nooks and the display itself has reduced. Sharp and Xiaomi both introduced bezel-less display phones last year, but as expected it hadn’t evolved much to the consumers’ likings. This year, top companies like LG, Samsung and Apple have adopted the bezel-less phone trend and released phones which look very futuristic yet have maximum utility.
LG started the trend early in 2017 when they launched the LG G6 in February with a 18:9 display i.e., a 2:1 ratio. This particular aspect ratio gives the phone a distinguished taller look particularly different from the earlier, more traditional ratio of 16:9. Using this aspect ratio, the phone is much smaller while installing a much larger display.
Followed by this, Samsung released their own flagship device, Galaxy S8 & Galaxy S8+. After the Note 7 debacle in 2016, Samsung had to release a phone which could help them gain back the customer trust which they lost. And boy oh boy, they did not disappoint. Samsung released their phones in April. They too featured a gorgeous display with a similar aspect ratio as LG G6. Although Samsung called it the Infinity Display. They used both a bezel-less display & their patented edge-to-edge display. They also introduced an iris scanner & facial recognition technology.
American company Apple introduced their own flagship last week. They launched the iPhone 8 & 8+ as well as the iPhone X (pronounced 10). The iPhone 8 & 8+ had smaller upgrades to their predecessor while it was the iPhone X that caused much excitement. The iPhone X is a commemorative phone and is a much more premium option in comparison to the 8 & 8+. The iPhone X has bezel-less display and it takes away the traditional home button from the iPhone. Apple has introduced many features which are a first for iPhones. It now has an OLED display, has facial recognition, wireless charging.
Companies like Xiaomi, the Essential phone also get honourable mention as they too have introduced a bezel-less design phone.
LG, Samsung, Apple have traditionally launched their phones with the bezel-less design which is oh so attractive to look at. These 3 companies usually make similarly designed phones with almost similar features but some stark and traditional differences.
